As someone who is French, I have this to say:
"That place does not represent us."
I'd buy that for a quarter.
I live 90 minutes from NO and I have been to Bourbon Street ONCE when I turned 18 I'm 51 now and I still haven't been back. DON'T GO!!

Dolly - it's sad. Florida could be such a beautiful destination but our motto down here seems to be Pave The World. Developers are more powerful than the Mafia down here. Love your avatar, by the way.
I felt disappointed when I went there.
And that dissappoints me as a resident. I feel like the area is marketed deceitfully and visitors can't help but feeling like they got sold a bad bill of goods. Maybe Disney will eventually buy the whole place; at least then it would be clean and nicely landscaped.

Oh quit trying to be so politically correct. You know that retarded terrorist attacks are more common in the middle east, even in egypt, just look it up, you will read headlines like "Egyptian militants kill tourists at Luxor", and thats just one, there are many. From what I hear Dubai seems to be less violent and extreme even though they have extremely harsh laws such as chopping your arm off for stealing, sending you to jail for several weeks for public drunkeness etc. Come on, the middle east has earned it's bloody record and I think people just like to seem worldly when they make comments like "Yeah, come on, the middle east is great!".....no thanks.
Though I admit that I have never been to the middle east and I could be proven wrong, that is the impression I get. Are the laws still like that in Dubai?
No..the laws arent like that. And harsh judgements arent just the prerogative of the middle east countries as amply illustrated by yr comment

Without taking sides in the India-Pakistan dispute over Kashmir (both sides have some valid arguments, IMHO) it's unlikely that a tourist will get caught up in the fighting unless he/she somehow evades military security cordons and checkpoints on both sides and climbs up into the high border area where the two armies confront each other.
Furthermore, the Ladakh (eastern) side of Jammu & Kashmir is perfectly peaceful, and in fact one of the most interesting and scenic tourist destinations I have ever visited.
i agree with you mike. i have spent a one month vacation in Kashmir and don't know why people are so scared of going to Kashmir. the place is simply awsome.
:| I know that. But theres always the lingering fear due to its war-ridden history

atlanta, georgia makes downtown nyc look like paradise
I think I would go with Sao Paulo, Brazil. I went there a couple years ago and it was like 3 feet from hell. I had to get through the city to get to my destination and I was never so scared.
I have been all through South Africa and let me tell you...South Africa has nothing on Sao Paulo. Cheers!
I lived in Atlanta for 4 1/2 years and I love Atlanta. With the new Aquarium downtown, the downtown area around the CNN center is much nicer. (The rest of downtown is lacking for a city of its size though). Also, Midtown, Buckhead, Virginia Highlands are all very nice.

Aw, Detroit isn't THAT bad. Ok, most of the neighborhoods suck, but downtown is making a comeback. GM has built the new riverwalk which is spectacular. Lots to do for entertainment in the D'town as well.
I saw footage of Detroit recently and I was shocked. I had heard about its reputation of course, but it was worse than I imagined. It looks like a forgotten city with its delapaded, decaying buildings. It doesn't look like an American city at all. Very sad for the poor people who have to live in such an environment.
