what is the waiting period for charges to be pressed against you when a report was made

    Murder, no deadline. Awful crimes, up to about 5 or 6 years. Lesser crimes, typically one year. Why do prosecutors wait? Because once they charge, they have to face the defendant's constitutional right to a speedy trial, often as soon as 90 days. The prosecutor has to make sure s/he has the evidence ready, the witnesses are available, etc. -retired lawyer
