Question

Help answer this question below.

While painting my ceiling the new paint seems to be peeling the old paint off. I'm using a roller with a 1/2" nap. What am I doing wrong?

If it's peeling off as you'r painting, it's very likely because you haven't properly prepared the surface for painting.

Any surface needs to be prepared for painting, including those that already have paint on them. This includes removing any pre-existing paint that is loose.

As well it should since you are applying new paint to chipping paint and the new paint acts like a glue on the roller. Apply to stripped surface for better results.

Sounds like you may have a moisture issue. I would clean off old the old paint, use a barrier primer, prime and paint

last person to paint failed to remove the grease with TSP(or substitute). scrub first and see what comes off. when nothing more comes off let dry and paint.

It could be that you are using a different type paint than what is already on the ceiling, one oil base and one water base. If that is the case you need to use a primer before painting.

The problem is more likely to be the solvent in the new paint than the roller, or it could just be that the old paint was unsuitable for the surface its applied to. Give it a rub with a wet rag and see if the old paint comes off. if it does, you'll have to go over the whole ceiling and remove the loose paint. I'd use a cloth or something tied over the end of a broom; maybe a scourer or even sandpaper, depending on how bad it is. You could also talk to whoever sold you the paint in case it requires a primer or undercoat.
