Help answer this question below.
Cigarette smoking is detrimental to the body's circulatory system. While tightening the blood vessels, it can also raise blood pressure and heart rate. The circulatory system helps carry oxygen to other parts of the body, but smoking will restrict that. Smoking also leads to stickier blood, which is prone to clotting, damage to the lining of the arteries and reduced blood flow to extremities. Nonsmokers exposed to second hand smoke in a home or work environment are increasingly likely to develop heart disease. Even minimal exposure to second hand smoke may damage blood vessels and increase an individual's risk of heart attack. According to the American Heart Association, individuals who smoke double their risk of developing coronary heart disease. Smoking also increases the risk of sudden death among individuals who have coronary heart disease. Narrowing of the arteries might lead to peripheral vascular disease, a disease of the blood vessels outside of the brain and heart. Individuals who have peripheral vascular disease are at increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Individuals who smoke are also likely to develop a weakened aorta. A weakened aorta is a dangerous condition that may lead to internal hemorrhaging. Internal bleeding can result in oxygen deprivation or organ failure, in some instances. Individuals who smoke should speak with their physician about a smoking cessation program. A number of over-the-counter products are available to assist with smoking cessation, including nicotine gum and patches.
