School dress codes and uniforms can decrease distractions in the classroom, which may improve academic performance. They can also minimize differences between students of varying socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition, dress codes and uniforms can prohibit gang-related or sexually provocative clothing. School dress codes and uniforms limit individuality by preventing students from expressing themselves through their clothing choices. Dress codes may have to be adjusted as students try to express themselves in other areas of clothing or accessories. Additionally, time spent enforcing dress codes can also detract from time spent learning. Although school dress codes and uniforms may improve the classroom environment by minimizing distractions and socioeconomic differences, they also limit student expression. Research shows that depending on the ares, dress codes can be effective against: gang symbols, illegal substance advertising and dressing provokatively but only temporarily, some areas longer than others. Students eventually figure out ways to follow the dress code and still dress provakitively of show gang symbols or advertise illegal substances.
In terms of controlling behaviour and neutralizing social status yes they are. It has been proven that uniform schools generally have less violence and aggression than schools without them. And so far as social status goes, no one is dressed more expensively than anyone else. It's the great equalizer.
