According to the National Cancer Institute, "Nausea is an unpleasant wavelike feeling in the back of the throat and/or stomach" that often leads to vomiting. At times, nausea is triggered by something serious. Doctors at Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center note that dizziness, excessive salivation, and the dry heaves can accompany the "sick to your stomach" feeling of nausea. Vomiting often provides relief. The Mayo Clinic claims that nausea is most often caused by viral gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu. Other common causes include motion sickness, migraines, and overeating. Persistent and unexplained nausea, often accompanied by vomiting, can be a sign of something serious, including brain tumors, bulimia, or an intestinal blockage, according to doctors at Mayo Clinic and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The National Cancer Institute points out that chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy targeted at the liver, brain, or GI tract can cause nausea and vomiting. Most of the time nausea can be treated at home. Stay hydrated, drink small amounts of clear liquid, and eat a bland diet to relieve the symptoms, according to doctors at Penn State and UT Southwestern. Penn State Milton S.
