    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Cloudy headlights are not only unsightly but can make driving dangerous. Reduced visibility could lead to an accident. There is a simple method to clean cloudy headlights.

    Materials

    600-grit sandpaper
    1,000-grit sandpaper
    2,000-grit sandpaper
    Rubbing compound

    Cleaning Tips

Clean off the initial grime from the headlight to allow for easier cleaning. Always keep the sandpaper and the headlight wet to prevent serious scratches. Start with the highest-grit sandpaper, 600, and work your way to 2,000-grit sandpaper. This progressive tactic ensures maximum cleanliness. Only sand in a side-to-side motion to go with the grain of the headlight. Sanding with each for 10 to 15 minutes will remove the most deposit from the lens.

    Finishing

Rub an abrasive rubbing compound on the lens after it has been sanded and dried to remove scratches from sanding.

If your headlights are acrylic or plastic, they probably suffer from a build up of natural oxidation.
That natural oxidation can be quickly removed with an acrylic deoxidizer and prevented with acrylic conditioners.
Both are pure liquid and non abrasive and will not harm the headlight lens surface.
Sanding is rarely the solution and in most cases a cause of greater problems with the lens later.
Scratches and pit removal would require the use of an abrasive.
Normal scratching and pitting of headlights do not effect light output.
Sanding them can actually make them cloud up worse and cause them to yellow.
Always try the least aggressive method first.
    Deoxidize.
Most headlights do not need or benefit from abrasive cleaning.
