Did anyone else notice that Sarah Palin had notes scribbled on the palm of her hand during her "Tea Party" speech?

• I think it's stuff like this that people adore because it makes her so much like them, ya know? Dontcha just wanna have a beer with her after you've killed a few wolves with her? I mean c'mon...she's no better than the worst of us which makes some of us thrilled that a soccer/hockey mom from a small town who quits her job before it's finished is gonna run for prez! She is one of them dontcha know? :(

• Actually, I would consider that a more serious faux pas than simply having something written on one's hand. It was a statement that he made that, added to other misstatements that he has made when he hasn't had a teleprompter to coach him, could seriously call into question how intelligent Obama really is. Simply having something written on one's hand is not an indicator one way or another of ones intelligence.
  
  I am incline to think that if you asked any reasonably knowledgeable American citizen how many states there are that most would be able to automatically get the number right. Then again, I have also seen too many edditions of Jay walking that Jay Leno did on the tonight show and I am not so sure. However, it does seem sad to me that a man who was running for President of the United States could make such an obvious mistake even if it was just a slip of the tongue. I wonder if Jay Leno ever did ask how may states there are in the country as part of one of those segments. It would be interesting (and quite possibly disheartening) to see how many people would get it right.

• Glenn: Do you not find it hypocritical in the least that Sarah Palin has made repeated references to Obama usinga teleprompter and yet she is caught using crib-notes to remember her CORE VALUES?!
  
  The issue isn't whether or not Obama uses a teleprompter or Sarah Palin writes on her hand, the issue is the outright double standard by which Sarah Palin approaches every issue. For instance, Rahm Emanuel can't say retard but Rush Limbaugh and Rick Perry's aid can. And here she is now, after months of blasting Obama for using a teleprompter, with notes on her hands and a sheet in front of her (did you notice how many times she looked down?).
  
  That is what I find so concerning, and she continues to do it and her supporters continue to make excuses for her behavior.

• Exactly, using notes to keep one on topic is a long and time honored technique of public speaking to help keep a speaker on topic. It helps the speaker remember what he wants to say and to present his ideas in a coherent manner. Someone has to be an exceptional speaker to be able to give a long speech completely from memory and not forget points that he wants to mention.
  
  That being written, using notes to keep one on topic is very different from merely reading the complete text of a speech. Sometime, sit down and watch both Palin and Obama give a speech. As I wrote above, Palin kept looking out at her audience. The only time Obama's eyes leave a telepromter screen is when he is turning his head to look at the other one.
  
  The flap about Palin having something written on her hand is just plain petty. How much of a 40 minute speech could she have written there? I saw the video. What she had written there could not have even been a full sentence. So, I find it doubtful that it even had anything to do with the speech.
  
  As for the issue of Emanuel using the word retard, it may surprise to know that I think that is rather overblown. It was a remark that he made in frustration to a bunch of Democrat activists. It was an insult that he aimed at this presidents own voters because they were complaining about Obama's lack of leadership on healthcare reform. If he wants to insult the people who make up Obama's core of support, then that is between them. It is a rather interesting indication of how little tolerance this administration has for dissent.
  
  However, it is Emanuel's response to the criticism that I find most interesting in this. He called a bunch of Democrat activists Retards and then apologizes to a bunch of people who are actually mentally retarded. That would be about the same as me insultingly calling you a clown and then going to a circus and apologizing to the clowns for equating you with them. As far as I know Emanuel hasn't apologized to the activists.
