  • Have you run anti-spy regularly? I find that spyware or cookies tend to slow things down quite a bit.
  • Could be anti-virus in the background. Right click on task bar, open task manager, go to Processes tab and sort by CPU column and see if a program is taking up a lot of CPU power. System Idle Process should be the highest, mine is at 94-97 most of the time. If a program is taking up lots of CPU you found the problem.
  • Have you emptied your cache memory lately,it saves information from all the websites you visit so uses up alot of memory. Also use disk cleanup on a regular bases to get rid of unwanted data.
  • I know it sounds silly but it might not hurt to blow out your CPU fans with an air can and clean the dust from the holes where the fans blow if you have tried everything else. Especially if it sounds louder than it used to.
  • Run AVG antivirus and Spybot. Just because you don't download stuff doesn't mean that you don't visit websites that automatically install this type of stuff to your computer. Also, clear out your Internet Browser's cache.
  • As Muddy just touched on, your computer downloads files all the time without you knowing. It also creates files as well. Many of these files are stored in "Temp" directories on your computer and typically can be safely deleted or otherwise removed. Your computer will create files that may (or may not) speed up the loading of webpages, by saving images and other page related content. Basically, the more files that you have on your computer, the slower your computer will run. It's best to save music, video, and photos on CDs or DVDs, since they aren't necessary for running your computer...but do tend to take up a lot of memory space. As well, clean up your cache and temp directories of unneeded or perhaps problematic files.
  • It is normal for computers to run slowly after having used the same operating system for a long time. If you really want to make your computer as it used to be back up your important files, take a bootable windows or some other OS disks and then format your computer.
