I believe that count is indefinite. 1. If we're talking concrete religions, we're constantly developing new ones. 2. I believe that religion isn't a thing in itself, it is what we make it to be. Ones religion could be God, another's could be music. Religion is, essentially: • a particular system of faith and worship : the world's great religions. • a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance : consumerism is the new religion. So, it is what you want it to be. If your passion in life is dance, if that is what you live by, that is your religion. I think that the mysteries which brought on the concreted religions were just beliefs people needed to have, they needed something to lean on, to rely on other than themselves for support, hope, whatever they needed it for. These days, we have so much to live for, to dream of...to base our lives on that we don't need to follow a particular predetermined religion. We make our own. And, essentially, I believe each human being holds his or her own beliefs which makes it their very own religion. If you want to follow a more common religion, then by all means...do so. But don't make yourself believe something you don't believe for the sane fact of being part of a religion. You're only lying to yourself, to the religion and to your faith. If you don't believe whatever they're telling you, turn away and read up on other religions, do your research...find yourself, your very own beliefs that will structure who you are, what you believe in and what you believe in enough to stand for. Even if you follow a particular, more popular religion...you have your very own unique flame for that faith in you that cannot be reproduced of copied by anyone else, which also makes you stand out from everyone else. No two are alike, ever. But that is just my opinion. There are countless religions, beliefs, faiths... Nearly as many as the amount of humans in this world...

1) "The exact number of religions in the world is unknown. Best estimates place the number around 4200." Source and further information: http://www.theologicalstudies.org/classicalreligionlist.html 2) "Adherents.com is a growing collection of over 43,870 adherent statistics and religious geography citations: references to published membership/adherent statistics and congregation statistics for over 4,200 religions, churches, denominations, religious bodies, faith groups, tribes, cultures, movements, ultimate concerns, etc. " Source and further information: http://www.adherents.com/ 3) "The following is a list of religions and spiritual traditions, however it excludes modern religions, which can be found in list of new religious movements. Note: A discussion of the ways in which "major religions" have historically been separated from the list of all religions can be found in the article Major world religions Note: As there are countless small religions, many of which cannot be verified to be real or legitimate, only those religions with Wikipedia articles will be listed in order to ensure that all entries on this list are notable and verifiable." Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religions (there are less than 500 religions in this list) "This List of new religious movements (NRMs), lists groups that either identify themselves as religious, ethical or spiritual organizations or are generally seen as such by religious scholars, which are independent of older denominations, churches, or religious bodies. This list reflects the fact that there is no generally agreed upon scholarly definition of new religious movement.[1] Parody religions are included." Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_new_religious_movements (there are less than 390 religions in this list) 4) here, for the record, a typical fundamentalist view: "How many different religions in the world are there? -Some would say thousands… -Others would say that all religions are the same, they all express a relationship with God… *But really, both of those answers are wrong. Because, there are two religions and they are very different: -The religion of the Law -The religion of the Gospel One thing we have to understand is that no other religion than Christianity is acceptable or has a right to exist in Jesus’ eyes" Source and further information: http://www.theriver.ws/docs/03_NumberofReligions.pdf
