Puppies are notorious for putting anything and everything in their mouths. From shoes to sofas, puppies don't seem to stop. You can stop your puppy from biting everything with consistent training methods and simple items you find at the pet store. Remember that puppies need to chew on things while they are teething and seek direction on what they can and cannot chew on. Using simple items such as a spray bottle or soda can with marbles is an effective tool to alert your puppy to a wrong behavior. Where many owners go wrong is they don't redirect a teething puppy with what he can chew on. The premise of correcting the behavior is to alert the puppy to the wrong behavior by either spraying him with water or shaking the can to startle him. Once you have his attention, tell him "No bite!" and redirect him with something he can bite immediately. For puppies that won't respond to water or noise, you can use items such as bitter apple or citronella sprays that taste and smell horrible but won't harm your puppy. Spraying items such as house slippers may also deter your puppy from chewing on them. But be sure to provide a teething puppy with ample chew toys. He needs the tactile sensation and will continue to find things to chew if you don't give him appropriate items. Consistency is the foundation of faster puppy training. When you aren't consistent, your puppy becomes confused and doesn't know what is expected of him. When your puppy is biting on anything other than one of his chew toys, you need to quickly remove the item and tell your puppy, "No bite!" Being quick to reprimand and reward lets your puppy know immediately what behavior you desire from him. If you happen to come home to your laundry hamper tipped and destroyed, you obviously cannot provide an immediate reprimand. You don't want your puppy to think he is bad for running up to you and licking your feet. You need to walk him to the laundry pile and tell him "No bite!" and move on.
