Ask for gift certificates, you can decide what you want/need later. Its either Master card or American express that will allow you to get a gift card that can be used for anything.
On the other hand, you might try the truth, that you don't want anything material. Then ask for something else, like a get together with friends, possibly hosted by them so you don't have to do anything.
