Ready to read the latest bestseller on your Kindle? Ever wonder exactly how Amazon decided on the name? As new products transform our lives, their names naturally become an important part of our daily vocabulary. Amazon's e-reader, the Kindle, was named by Michael Cronan, a San Francisco graphic designer. According to his wife and partner, Karen Hibma, he wanted to find a name that fit with Amazon CEO's Jeff Bezos' vision for the e-reader. Bezos believed that it would ignite a revolution in the industry. The word kindle means to "set alight or start to burn, to arouse or be aroused, to make or become bright." The word comes from the Old Norse word "kyndill," meaning a candle or torch. Just as a candle can start a large fire, Cronan quotes Victor Hugo in his own description of the Kindle: "to read is to start a fire." Michael Cronan also named the digital video recorder, TiVo.Significance
