There are many file formats used by modern computers today. One such format is known as ACE. This is one of many kinds of archiving formats for the compression of data, and there are many ACE files available online today. The file format known as an ACE archive is a file compression format produced by a program called WinACE. It is a proprietary format of a software product currently managed by a company known as e-merge GmbH. File compression software, such as WinACE, uses various methods of compressing data from one file or multiple files into one or more archives. The archive files are intended to be smaller in size for the purpose of conserving space and also bandwidth. One example of file compression is for software to find multiple instances of the same word in multiple text files, and then put the location of the word into a table with one instance of the word. The word is essentially stored only in the table in the archive, rather than in the archived text files. Later, when the archive is decompressed, the word is placed into the text files again. This is the basic concept of file compression. Some compression software, such as WinACE, has the capability to make multiple part archives consisting of multiple archive files. This is a way of keeping each archive small, while still compressing a large number of files or a much larger single file. A multi-part ACE archive can be good for saving files to media smaller than the original file, such as saving a gigabyte file to multiple smaller CDR discs. It is also a useful way of emailing files, since some email services limit attachment sizes. WinACE is only available for Windows, although there is software for expanding ACE archives on other operating systems.ACE File Format
