According to Virginia Tech University's Music Department, the treble clef is a stylized G symbol representing the musical letter G that indicates the pitch of notes located on lines and spaces of a musical staff. The treble clef marks the bottom line of the staff of five horizontal lines as the musical note E with each following line the next letter of the musical alphabet. The treble clef symbol evolved from the letter G that was known as the Italian style G before 1750 AD. There are a number of clefs, including the treble clef, bass clef with the first line of the staff as G and the grand staff that combines the bass and treble clefs. The staff on which the treble clef is placed is a set of five equidistant, horizontal lines connected by a brace onto which musical notes are written. The treble clef is referred to by different names in a variety of languages, including the Clef de Sol (French), G-Schlussel (German) and Chiave di Violino (Italian).Notation
