A cross with a circle can have many names and meanings. It can be a Celtic cross, a sun cross or solar cross, the Consecration Cross, Woden's Cross, Wheel Cross and others. Some crosses with circles derive their meaning from Christianity and others have a pagan origin.

    Celtic cross

The Celtic cross has origins in Celtic traditions and is sometimes known as the Gaelic cross. Its design is a blend of Celtic beliefs and Catholicism.

    Sun cross

The sun or solar cross is ancient, dating all the way back to at least 1440 B.C. The division that the arms of the cross make in the circle represents the seasons in a year. These divisions are also said to represent the four directions.

    Consecration Cross

The Consecration Cross is Christian in origin. The cross represents Christ and the circle a halo.

    Woden's cross

Woden's cross or Odin's cross predates Christianity by many lifetimes. It is like a sun cross or wheel cross and serves as a symbol for Woden, the prime God in German paganism also known as Odin.

    Wheel cross

The Wheel cross is also Germanic. It is another version of Woden's cross. This symbol represents the turning of life's wheel from life to death.

The Egyptian cross, known as the crux ansata, was surmounted by a circle. This combination represented the male and female procreative organs. Referring to the female symbol on this cross—the circle—by the Hindu term yoni, the book Sex and Sex Worship by O. A. Wall states on page 359: “The crux ansata (cross with a handle) was used all over the world from India, Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, to Sweden and Denmark (old Runic) and in the Western Continent. . . . It is the ankh of the Egyptians, the symbol of life, because it represents the feminine yoni in union with the masculine tau cross.”
