  • There are many conditions that can cause the pituitary gland to secrete no human growth hormone. There are two forms, acquired and congenital, and they can occur with other pituitary hormone deficiencies.

    Traumatic Brain Injury

If a severe brain or head injury occurs that damages the pituitary gland, production of human growth hormone can stop.

    Congenital

Congenital reasons for no human growth hormone mean that a child was born with an abnormally created pituitary or hypothalamus. The condition is present at birth, but it might not be noticed for months.

    Infection

Severe infections like meningitis and encephalitis are known to damage the pituitary gland. This can later interfere with the production of human growth hormone.

    Idiopathic

Sometimes no specific cause can be identified as the reason that human growth hormone isn't being produced by the body or the suspected cause can't be easily proven.

    Tumor

A tumor, craniopharyngioma, is responsible for many of the cases of acquired lack of human growth hormone. The only cure for the tumor is removal, which results in permanent cessation of human growth hormone production.
