Pediatric nurses provide medical care to infants, children and adolescents. Nursing duties involve assessing patients, administering medications, collecting urine and stool samples and providing acute care. In addition to holding nursing degrees, pediatric nurses take courses geared toward child care.
Human Growth and Development
Psychology of Human Growth and Development, a three-hour credit course, teaches pediatric nurses the biological and environmental factors that affect a person's physical, cognitive and emotional development from birth until death.
Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology is taught in two sections, each earning three college credits. Pediatric nurses learn how the body responds and adapts to disease and injury.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support
Pediatric Advanced Life Support, a 14-hour course provided by the American Heart Association, teaches pediatric nurses how to deal with children experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest and respiratory conditions.
Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course
The Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course, offered by the Emergency Nurses Association, is a 16-hour class teaching pediatric nurses how to help children experiencing life-threatening emergencies.
Infant/Child CPR
The American Red Cross provides three infant and child CPR courses, each about four hours, for child care providers, covering the techniques used to administer first aid to kids.
