It depends. Most of the time you will get it back quickly with a friendly reminder to add more postage. Occasionally the stamps may be canceled before they catch the insufficient postage, in which case you have to pay all of the postage again. If the stamp(s) don't have any markings on them than you can use them again.

You're reading What happens when a letter is returned to sender due to improper postage? Can you just add the additional postage needed, or must you put the letter in a new envelope and start from scratch?

I thought the post office would charge you with an offence for not having proper postage i.e. charged for trying to "cheat" the postal service. Wouldnt you get a strict warning or mark against your name though? plus 4.

As far as I know, the USPS does not maintain a master list of people whose mail is returned for insufficient postage. If it is an honest mistake then don't worry about it.
