A herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc or ruptured disc, is when the material that cushions the vertebral bones become damaged. Herniated discs can be caused by an injury to the spine or can occur because the discs lose flexibility. WebMD states that the loss of flexibility is just part of the normal aging process.
Treatment Goals
Treatment goals for a person with a herniated disc include relieving pain, weakness and numbness; promoting a return to work and recreational activities; and to prevent re-injury and disability.
Non-surgical Treatments
Non-surgical treatment options include physical therapy, rest, core strengthening exercises and pain relief.
Surgery
For 10 percent of people with a herniated disc, surgery is an eventual treatment, according to WebMD. Surgery can be beneficial for those with progressive nerve damage or weakness.
Discectomy
A discectomy is a surgical procedure in which is the material in the disc is removed. A discectomy is only done to relieve leg pain and other leg symptoms, not just back pain.
Pain Management Counseling
Pain management counseling can help patients learn coping skills that can help them reduce problems that can accompany chronic pain. Patients who experience chronic pain also experience feelings of anger, despair and sadness, according to WebMD.
