<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: The Claims
Due to their complex engineering, synthetic oils are touted to help keep engines cleaner and reduce engine wear. Additionally, they provide added protection from cold temperatures and can help to improve fuel economy. The biggest attraction for most car owners is the additional length between oil changes, which can save money and time.
On the Other: Car Manufacturers and Cost
Synthetic oils cost more than regular oil, ranging from 25 to 50 percent higher at an oil and lube dealer. While some synthetic oil manufacturers initially claimed that oil changes could performed less frequently with the use of their product, most car manufacturers still recommend oil changes at around 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Bottom Line
Synthetic oil will not save money or time on oil changes, and must be changed per the car's recommended mileage. Improved design of synthetic oil has been shown to create less wear and sludge within the engine, however, and is a good choice for consumers that have the extra money or wish to better preserve a car with the higher-grade oil.
