Do I buy a laptop IDE or Laptop SATA harddrive to slip into an external usb case?

It depends on the type of external USB case you have. The only way to know for sure is the inspect the box it came in, look up the model of the case on the net for instructions, or inspect the connectors inside the case. Keep in mind that external hard drive cases are also made for full sized hard drives (3.5"), not just laptop sized ones (2.5").
