Black Americans have made many great contributions to their country by way of invention. Whether life-saving or for entertainment, these inventions have changed the world and affected people's lives.
Peanut Butter
Peanut butter, invented by black American George Washington Carver, is consumed by 89 percent of U.S. households, according to Serious Eats.
Agriculture
Black American inventions have had a big impact on agriculture. For example, George Washington Murray invented a cotton chopper and fertilizer distributor among several other inventions, according to the National Agricultural Library.
The Blues
Black American slaves developed the musical genre known as the blues out of field hollers and chants sung during hard work days. The blues have influenced jazz, rock-and-roll and many other musical genres.
Portable Air Conditioner
A black American inventor, Frederick McKinley Jones, invented a portable air conditioning unit used in military hospital fields during World War II. These allowed the military to store medicine and blood serum in warm temperatures, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Hair
There were hardly any hair products available for blacks in the 19th century. But young black American Madam C.J. Walker invented hair products that were suitable for black women, according to America.gov.
