Attic fans offer a fast and economical way to cool a house. They can refresh the air in the house much faster than central air conditioning, and can save you significant money on your electric bill. Attic fans are especially effective if you have cool evenings.
On the Other: Attic Fans Have Some Drawbacks
If you live in a very warm climate, attic fans may not cool your house effectively. Additionally, since attic fans bring in outside air, they can also bring dust, pollution and pollen inside your house. Depending on your location and your sensitivity to air quality, an attic fan may not be a good option. Finally, in very humid areas, attic fans will increase the humidity of your home, which will make it feel warmer.
Bottom Line
Consider your location and needs. Is the air outside cool, dry and clean enough to use it to cool your house? Although attic fans can be effective in many situations, they are not always helpful.
