In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed National Hispanic Heritage Week. The proclamation came four years after the Civil Rights Act and two years after a plan was formed for Cubans to be airlifted into the U.S. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended the celebration to 30 days, creating Hispanic Heritage Month.
