  • The hamstring is one of the most important muscles in the body. It's function is necessary for functioning on a daily basis. The hamstring is both a mover and stabilizer.

    Identification

The hamstring is a muscular complex that is composed of four smaller muscles: biceps femoris (long head), biceps femoris (short head), semimembranosus and the semitendinosus.

    Function

This muscle is primarily responsible for movement in the lower body through hip and knee flexion and extension.

    Secondary function

The hamstring complex also helps with stabilizing the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex as a secondary function.

    Fun Fact

The hamstring complex works with the quadriceps complex, the muscle complex located above the knee of the front of the leg. Often it works opposite the hamstring, accelerating extension where the hamstring decelerates it.

    Expert Insight

Drinking plenty of water and stretching the muscle regularly will keep the hamstring healthy.
