<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Anti-Oxidant Properties
The manufacturers of Shen Min Hair Vitamins claim that the vitamins can stop hair loss and rejuvenate and thicken hair by targeting the hair follicles. It claims to cause gray hair to return to its natural color and fight the type of baldness known as alopecia. The active ingredient in Shen Min is the ancient Chinese herb He Shou Wu, which is derived from the Eastern wild rose, and also known as fo-ti or Chinese knotweed. He Shou Wu contains tetrahydroxystilbene, which, according to the Institute for Traditional Medicine, has been shown to be an antioxidant anti-inflammatory drug and is used in treatments for cardiovascular health, as well as preventing Alzheimer's disease.
On the Other: Unproven Effectiveness
There is no doubt that the ingredients in Shen Min have been used for centuries by the Chinese for hair loss and graying prevention. However, few studies have shown any real effectiveness when taken as a supplement such as Shen Min. Also, there are side effects. According to Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D at ITM, He Shou Wu contains the laxative compound emodin, and users have reported severe nausea and stomach pain. The Medicines and Health Care Products Regulatory Agency in London reported a small number of severe liver reactions to this herb, including jaundice and hepatitis.
Bottom Line
Scientific studies are still being conducted on the effectiveness of Shen Min and He Shou Wu. Even though it has antioxidant properties, there is no evidence to suggest that it plays a role in preventing loss of hair or graying, and it might cause unwanted side effects.
