There is no existing law in most countries that require a self-published book, or any book, to have an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). However, the organization that coordinates ISBNs, the International ISBN Agency, will usually assign one to a book when they become aware of it, and most book sellers will require the book to have one before they will sell it.
