There are times when, out of nowhere, a glass bowl will shatter. There are a number of different reasons why this can happen, from temperature change to the manufacturing process.
Thermal Shock
Thermal shock is when an item experiences an extreme change in temperature. For example, a hot glass bowl placed in a cold sink.
Improper Use
Not all glass bowls are made with tempered glass and may not be dishwasher, microwave or oven safe. The product description should always be read before using a new glass bowl to prevent shattering.
Tiny Fractures
Tempered glass bowls are made strong enough to withstand breaking if dropped in the sink or on the counter. Yet, they can still get small fractures that may not even be seen. These fractures will cause the bowl to become weak and can cause it to shatter under normal use.
Age
Over time, glass bowls can become brittle; they may not be able to withstand normal use and will shatter more easily.
Flaws
Sometimes there is a flaw in the manufacturing process and the glass isn't as strong as it should be. This flaw can cause bowls to shatter even when they're used properly because the glass mixture didn't have the right mix of materials.
