<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Crib Bumpers Protect Babies From Crib Slats
Many parents use crib bumpers on their infants' cribs to keep them from hitting their heads on the crib bars. Bumpers also help keep limbs from getting stuck between the slats. Dr. William Sears, a renowned pediatric doctor, professor of pediatrics at the University of California-Irvine School of Medicine and author of more than 30 books on childcare, says firm and thin bumpers are safe when placed snugly around the crib and tied securely.
On the Other: Some Doctors Caution Against Crib Bumper Use
Some doctors and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) experts do not recommend using crib bumpers, especially the thick fluffy type, for the fear that a baby may put her face against them and suffocate.
Bottom Line
First Candle (formerly the SIDS Alliance) says it is all right for parents to use crib bumpers if they are the thin and firm type. They don't recommend the fluffy, softer styles that can block breathing if a baby places his face against them.
