Restasis (cyclosporine opthalmic emulsion) is, according to Medline Plus, an immunomodulator used to treat dry eye disease by increasing tear production. Restasis is only available as a prescription, and some people should not use Restasis.
Use
The use of Restasis is limited to people who have limited tear production because of chronic dry eye, according to the drug's manufacturer, Allergan, Inc.
Considerations
The manufacturer of Restasis states that it is not useful in relieving symptoms in people who have a tear-duct plug or who use steroid drops.
Medical Conditions
Cyclosporine ophthalmic should not be used while a person has an eye infection and its effects on people who have had herpes eye infection are unknown, according to Allergan, Inc.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses should not be worn while applying Restasis, according to Allergan, Inc.; Medline Plus suggests waiting 15 minutes before putting in lenses after using Restasis.
Warning
People who are allergic to other medications, including other forms of cyclosporine should not use Restasis. Medline Plus advises discussing other medications as well as current or possible pregnancy with a doctor before taking Restasis.
