  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Organic Products Aren't More Nutritious

Foods labeled "organic" aren't proven to be more nutritious. Instead, the organic label refers to the way in which products are treated during growth and processing. Organic farmers replace chemicals and additives with natural alternatives at every part of the growth process, whereas traditional farmers use man-made insecticides, hormones, fertilizers and herbicides to treat their crops. Despite these changes in growth, organic products do not have a higher or radically different quality of nutrition.

On the Other: Saving the Environment Costs Money

Though organic flax seeds may not necessarily be "better" for your health than their non-organically produced counterparts, they are generally believed to be better for the environment. Organic farmers go to great lengths to protect the environment while growing their crops. However, the lengths organic farmers go to implement environmentally conscious practices is reflected in price; organic products tend to be more expensive than traditionally grown products.

    Bottom Line

Though organic and non-organic flax seeds are nutritionally indistinguishable from one another, buying organic is a greener option. If you're willing to spend a little more to buy a more environmentally friendly product, try organic.
