  • Turabian style is a guide to writing written by Kate L. Turabian, a former secretary of dissertations at the University of Chicago. As with APA and MLA writing styles, Turabian style gives a helping hand to those who are writing a paper and are not sure how to format it. Specifically, Turabian style is a guide for students. The full title includes the purpose: A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations.

How to Write In Turabian Style

The Turabian is a guidebook on formatting academic papers and dissertations. In terms of basic grammar, Turabian style does not differ from MLA or APA guides. In fact, there are only a few minor differences between it and The Chicago Manual of Style, to which it is often compared. These differences are mostly found in regard to reference citations and bibliographies.

    Examples of Turabian Rules

In both the Chicago and Turabian manuals, one chooses between two citation systems. Either notes and a bibliography, or in-text, author-date citations and a reference list. In Turabian style, note numbers are superscript. In general you are to "List the elements that clearly identify the work's author and title, its publisher, and date of publication," according to the UC Berkley library website. In punctuation, periods are used betwen elements in references in bibliographies and reference lists. Use a colon to separate titles from subtitles, and the place of publication from the publisher's name. Quotation marks are used around chapter titles and article titles. There are many more specific areas such as capitalization, abbreviations, font, etc., that Turabian style covers. Many examples can be found on a number of college websites. You can also purchase the book itself to use when writing a research paper or dissertation.
