  • The Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799 in the town of El-Rashid in Lower Egypt. Because the same text was written on it in three languages (Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and Demotic), it allowed Egyptologists to decipher hieroglyphs correctly for the first time.
