The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an advisory on using topical flea and tick pesticide products in April 2009. This advisory pertains to about 70 products, which have had increasing reports of bad reactions in pets, including mild skin irritation, skin burns, seizures and in some cases even death.
Topical flea treatments can be very effective and the EPA does not advise people to stop using them. Many pet owners use them without any harmful effects. However, they urge people to use caution and to be informed in their decision to use the products. Additionally, the EPA advises pet owners to carefully monitor their pets for any signs of a bad reaction.
Topical flea products for pets are effective and generally safe when used with caution. When following label directions and talking to the veterinarian about using the products responsibly, the chance for a bad reaction is significantly reduced.
