Wattage ratings on generators indicate how much power they will provide. A 1,000-watt generator can provide a total of 1,000 watts to one device or several.
Light Bulbs
All light bulbs are rated in watts. A 1,000-watt generator will run 10 100-watt light bulbs or 20 50-watt light bulbs.
Heating Devices
Any device that generates heat will draw a significant amount of power, often too much for a 1,000-watt generator. For example, a typical hair dryer might draw 1,500 watts of power.
Device Ratings
All electrical devices are rated in either watts or amps and labeled on their UL (Underwriters Laboratory) label.
Amperage
Some devices are rated in amperage. Amperage is another way to indicate how much power a device will draw.
Converting
To convert amperage to wattage, multiply the number of amps by the number of volts. For example, if you live in the United States, your normal household voltage is 120 volts, so a 6-amp device would draw 720 watts (120 volts x 6 amps = 720 watts).
