  • If you have submitted your tax returns for last year and are waiting for your check to arrive, there are systems in place that allow you to check the status of your return. In California, you can get the status of your tax return immediately online or by phone.

    Checking Your Refund Status

Residents of California can check the status of their state income tax refund at the State of California Franchise Tax Board website, located at ftb.ca.gov. In order to receive your refund status, you'll need to enter your social security number, mailing address and the amount of your refund according to your state tax return. If you have moved in the time since you filed your California tax return, you'll need to call the Franchise Tax Board at (800) 852-5711. California issues tax refunds via check and direct deposit. Generally speaking, direct deposit refunds are received more quickly than paper checks, which must be printed and mailed. Another tip to expedite the delivery of your tax return is to file as early in the year as possible. According to the Franchise Tax Board website, returns can take approximately six to eight weeks to process--particularly for those individuals who file near the April deadline.
