A variety of herbs have a relaxing effect on the body and may help treat anxiety. Consult a health care practitioner before taking any herbs since they can have side effects (like allergic reactions) or adversely react with prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Catnip
Although catnip is most popular for entertaining pet cats, in humans it acts as a sedative that relieves muscle tension.
Valerian
Valerian is recommended for reducing daytime stress. It will also help you rest better at night by promoting deep sleep.
Chamomile
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center's Complementary and Alternative Medicine Index, anxiety relief is the number one reason people in the U.S. take chamomile, which is often drunk as a tea.
St. John's Wort
In addition to soothing anxiety, St. John's Wort is well known for treating conditions like depression, insomnia and indigestion.
Lemon Balm
The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that lemon balm is considered a "calming herb." It's usually consumed in conjunction with another herb, like chamomile or valerian, to increase its anti-anxiety properties.
