  • A notary, also referred to as a notary public, is a public official entrusted with power to witness and certify to the authenticity of documents. Two requirements for becoming a notary in New Jersey are that a prospective notary must receive the endorsement of her state legislator and must not have a criminal background.

    Notary Public Application

The first step in becoming a notary in New Jersey is completing the Notary Public Application from the New Jersey Department of Treasury. Complete the form as thoroughly and as truthfully as possible. Complete the form thoroughly, so that your application is not delayed by incomplete information. Complete the form truthfully, because any omission or falsification on the form may disqualify your application.

    State Legislator Endorsement

Have your state legislator endorse your application.

    Fees and Method of Application

Write a check payable to "Treasurer, State of New Jersey" for the processing fee of the Notary Public Application. As of 2010, the fee is 25 dollars. Mail your endorsed application and fee to: The Division of Revenue, Notary Public Unit, PO Box 452, Trenton, NJ 08646. If you are not a resident of New Jersey, file an affidavit with the Treasurer establishing residence in New Jersey by indicating where you plan to open your office as a New Jersey notary. Applications without this affidavit may be denied. Send the affidavit with your application form.
