The duties of a resident assistant, or RA, vary from college to college. But no matter the school, RAs are there primarily to provide a safe and fun environment for students living on college campuses.
Aiding in Transition
Many new college students are away from home for the first time. Resident assistants help provide advice and guidance and to offer a more personal atmosphere to dorm life.
Supervision
Resident assistants make sure that all students living in college-owned housing remain safe and follow the school's rules and regulations.
Creating Activities
Resident assistants provide useful activities for students living in their dorm. These activities can include games, tournaments and educational speakers. RAs also offer academic advice.
Conflict Resolution
Living with another person is can be difficult, so resident assistants often act as a mediator to help limit eliminate conflict between students living in their dorm.
Acting as a Liaison
Because they are both members of the student body and employees of the college administration, resident assistants often act as a go-between for college officials and the students.
