  • Basements are important spaces for storage and living. However, basements also tend to be cold and wet. While all basements may have a tendency to be wet, it doesn't mean that they have to be wet. With a sealer, homeowners can fix mold and mildew problems caused by a wet basement. When you know how to seal your wet basement you will be able to better use it as the functional storage and living space you have always wanted.

    Kill the Mold

Most wet basements have a common problem: mold. It is important to kill mold and mildew before sealing your basement. This is a simple task. Just mix one part water with one part bleach into a spray bottle. Once the bleach and water is mixed you can spray the mixture directly onto the mold. Allow to completely dry before applying a sealing agent.

    Wear Protection

Because sealing agents are typically made with harsh chemicals, it is important to protect yourself. Wear long sleeves, pants and proper footwear. You will also want to purchase a gas mask to protect yourself from harmful fumes that may accompany the sealer. Gas masks can be purchased from local home improvement stores.

    Seal the Basement

Once the mold and mildew are gone and you have properly prepared yourself, you can seal your basement. Home improvement stores sell basement sealers like Drylock. Apply two coats of Drylock or a similar sealer with a paintbrush and roller. Always allow the sealer to dry between coats. While both latex- and oil-based Drylock is available, many homeowners have found better success with the oil-based version.
