A connection between a printer and a laptop is necessary if you want to print. Once the printer is configured, you will never have to repeat the process, as the configuration will be saved.
Plug and Play
If your laptop is not connected to your printer, buy a cable that will connect the two devices. Most printers use an USB to parallel cable. Most printers require software to function. However, there are some "plug and play" printers that can be accessed without installing software. To check if your printer is "plug and play," go to the website of the manufacturer of your printer and see the product specifications for your printer model. Plug and play printers will work immediately when they are connected to your laptop.
Software Installation
Once the printer and laptop are connected, insert the installation disk that came with the printer into the disk drive. Wait for the installation wizard to launch the installation process. Follow all the prompts to install the software. The installation process is usually very simple and will take a minute or two. However, it can vary depending on the manufacturer. When you finish the installation, restart you computer. The printer should now be communicating with your laptop.
