Canine distemper is a viral infection in dogs that is often fatal and that can be transmitted to other dogs. Because of the severity of the infection, it is important for a weaned puppy to be vaccinated for distemper. As with many vaccinations, there may be some side effects.
Lethargy
Lethargy, which may resemble exhaustion or deep sleep, is a common side effect in puppies who receive the canine distemper vaccination.
Swelling
Swelling at the injection site is a common side effect of the distemper shot. Rarely, the puppy may also experience facial swelling, which requires medical attention.
Fever
A low-grade fever may accompany the vaccination as the puppy's immune system responds to the vaccine. A high fever requires medical attention.
Weight Loss
Some puppies experience loss of appetite after receiving the canine distemper vaccine, which may result in temporary minor weight loss.
Anaphylaxis
Very rarely, a puppy may experience an allergic reaction to the vaccine known as anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include collapse, rapid heartbeat, hives and trouble breathing.
