Because there is no licensing requirement for ultrasound technicians, or sonographers, the education necessary varies. Colleges offer two- and four-year programs in ultrasound technology. Other options include vocational school and on-the-job training. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography provides certification--upon successful completion of an exam--which an employer may deem important.
