Has anyone truly found the background of the Melungeons of the Appalacians?

Opinions will vary but I believe the most accepted origin seems to point twords a ship wrecked vessel full of Portugese passing on thier genetic material to a close knit community of native americans and other local people of color. sarita1 Sounds like a good theory, but then we have to ask ourselves also, what happened to the Roanoke settlers? There is speculation that the Melungeons are really their missing descentants. Joe: Weren't the Melungeons already existing when Raleigh got to Roanoake?
