Cord blood is sometimes taken from a baby immediately after birth. According to the Cord Blood Registry, a stem cell bank accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks, cord blood may be used as treatments for conditions such as heart attacks, juvenile diabetes and cerebral palsy, among others.
Features
The stem cells in cord blood can be used in certain medical treatments much like bone marrow can, according to the Cord Blood Registry. Cord banking involves an opportunity for parents to save stem cells from their baby's cord blood for future medical uses.
Heart Attacks
Cord blood cells have the potential to improve outcomes in patients following heart attack, according to the Cord Blood Registry.
Breast Cancer
Looking at cord blood stem cell units and familial profiles may determine a genetic predisposition for breast cancer, according to research done by Dr. Akita Shibata of Stanford University who has collaborated with the Cord Blood Registry.
Vision Loss
Vision loss can occur when cells are lost or are not replaced quickly enough. According to the Cord Blood Registry, when transplanted in animals, cord cells improved the appearance of the surface of the cornea.
Juvenile Diabetes and Cerebral Palsy
The use of cord blood stem cells, according to the Cord Blood Registry, can regenerate insulin production in juvenile diabetes patients. Cord Blood has also been tested as a treatment for brain injury and cerebral palsy.
