In the modern workplace, security cameras are quite common and ensure additional security. Many camera models with up-to-date technology are available and any office or store can benefit from the use of video surveillance.
History
Law enforcement began using closed circuit television cameras in the 1960s to survey criminals. With the addition of recording ability in the 1970s, security cameras gained popularity in both public businesses and private homes.
Types
The three main types of security cameras are closed circuit television (provides no recording ability), analog (provides recording ability, but requires a VCR or DVR) and IP (records and compresses digital video within the device and can transmit images to networked computers).
Benefits
No matter the type of workplace, video surveillance can deter theft, increase employee productivity, monitor unpopulated areas and potentially reduce workplace insurance premiums. Additionally, with 24/7 surveillance, the chances of vandalism and after-hours criminal activity severely decreases.
Considerations
A workplace may want to consider using both visible and hidden security cameras for combined protection.
Warning
Before installing or using a video security camera, be sure to become familiar with all local and applicable privacy laws.
