Pygeum comes from the pygeum tree found in central and south Africa. The locals have used the bark from this evergreen for thousands of years for its medicinal properties.
Benefits
African medicine men use pygeum bark extract to cure urinary and bladder problems, especially those related to an enlarged prostate, according to the U.S. National Institute of Health.
Function
Typical doses of pygeum range between 75 and 200 milligrams in capsule form. Stinging nettle may aid the effectiveness of pygeum.
Fun Fact
The popularity and effectiveness of pygeum extract (the National Institute of Health gives it the best grade possible for treating an enlarged prostate) in treating bladder and urinary problems has resulted in environmental groups listing the African pygeum tree as an endangered species.
Side Effects
In adults, the only noticeable side effect seems to be moderate gastrointestinal discomfort. However, as of 2010, there is no data on its effects in more at risk groups, such as children and pregnant women.
Warning
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers pygeum an herbal extract, which comes with few regulations. The FDA cannot vouch for pygeum's effectiveness and people should visit a licensed doctor before using this supplement.
