  • Many bed frames are designed to accommodate a box spring and a mattress. If you would like your mattress to sit lower to the ground or prefer not to purchase or move a box spring, there are alternatives.

    Function

Box springs provide support and height to mattresses. A platform bed, a piece of plywood or the floor can also perform these functions.

    Board

If you own a bed requiring a box spring, have a piece of plywood cut to the same length and width as the box spring. Place it where the box spring would go and you will have enough support to place your mattress in a frame. This will add firmness to your mattress.

    Platform

Platforms are frames designed to support and hold a mattress without a box spring. They are available in different styles and sizes and are often indistinguishable from traditional bed frames once there is bedding on top of the platform.

    Floor

You can always place your mattress directly onto the floor if you lack a box spring or bed frame. While not always the best design look, it is a functional alternative to a box spring.

    Considerations

If you are considering a box spring alternative because your mattress is extra thick, low profile box springs are available which measure half the height of traditional box springs.

  • The best and cheapest bed is the original water bed, now called "full wave action". You can buy a full setup for 150 bux, and a frame can be any amount you care to spend, starting at about 50 bux if you are the DIY type. The only catch is you can't have a cat and a waterbed in the same house. The mattress will not survive the encounter.
