Many changes take place in a woman's body during pregnancy, but one that is often not expected is changes in skin pigment. These changes in skin pigmentation are often not any cause for concern.
Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of skin in certain areas due to hormone changes during pregnancy. Excessive amounts of melanin are often released in certain parts of the body, therefore darkening the skin.
Mask of Pregnancy
The "Mask of Pregnancy" is the common term for hyperpigmentaion that takes place on specific areas of the face. This hyperpigmentation of facial skin, better known medically as melasma, may include darkening of the cheeks, upper lip, chin, forehead and jawline.
Worsening of Melasma
The dark areas that come about on the upper lip, and other parts of the face, during pregnancy are known to worsen in the sun and possibly during additional pregnancies.
Prevention/Solution
Hyperpigmentation of the upper lip cannot be prevented. It is recommended that women experiencing the Mask of Pregnancy wear sunblock to prevent further darkening of the area.
Treatment
Hyperpigmentation of the upper lip cannot be treated during pregnancy. It may go away several months after a woman gives birth, however, and can be treated with Retin A if still not fading.
